Our Craft

Restoring the writing surfaces of fine furniture

At James of St Albans we offer the hard to find service of table lining — the laying down, tooling and gold embossing of leather tops for tables, desks, lap boxes and the like.

Over time, the leather inset on a desk or table top can crack, fade or lift at the edges. Relining restores both the look and the practicality of the piece, giving it a smooth, protected writing surface once again.

We are happy to discuss your requirements, and our customers are always surprised at the reasonable cost of the service.

How It Works

What table lining involves

1

Laying

The old, worn leather is carefully removed and a new leather panel is cut and laid to fit the top precisely, edge to edge.

2

Tooling

Decorative borders and patterns are hand-tooled into the leather, echoing the traditional style of the piece.

3

Gold Embossing

Fine gold detailing is embossed along the tooled lines, giving the finished top its classic, lustrous edge.
